Doing a literature review takes time

Doing a literature review takes time — a lot of time. Here's a new workflow that will supercharge your literature review.

You can learn this workflow in 15 min.

Go to litmaps(dot)com. Cick on the Sign Up/Login in the top-right corner.

Click on "Your Library" in the left taskbar and then on "Create a Collection." Choose a name for your collection.

Once you have created a collection, click on the blue "Add articles" button.

Select "Search for Articles" to look up articles. You can look up articles by title, keyword, or DOI.

Litmaps will give you a list of articles. Select an article you find most relevant.

Litmaps will add the selected article to your collection.

Next click on the article in your collection and Litmaps will open a dialog box for you. Click on "Seed Map" in the dialog box.

Litmaps will create a map of articles related to your article.

In the map:

Along the X-axis, you will see articles from old to new.

Along the Y-axis, you will see articles with most citations at the top.

Hover your mouse over an article and Litmpas will highlight the articles that are directly related to the selected article.

To add an article to your collection, simply click on it and then select "Add to Collection" in the column to the left.

You can generate another seed map using a different article in the map.

Using various maps, select articles that are most relevant to your project and add them to your collection.

Once you have a bunch of articles in your collection, you can also see they are related to each other.

To do so, simply slect all articles in your collection and then click on "View as a Map."

In Litmaps, you can also look up articles related to your whole collection.

To do so, click on "Related articles" and select "Search Depth."

1° depth includes immediate citations.
2° depth includes citations of citations.

Litmaps will create a map of related articles.

Add articles to your collection using various maps.

Next open your Zotero. Click on "File" and select "New Collection."

Name your collection. Use the same name for your Zotero collection that you have for your Litmaps collection.

Next click on the Zotero Connector in your web browser.

This will open a "Zotero Item Selector." Click on "Select All" and then on "OK."

This will copy all articles in your Litmpas collection to your Zotero collection.

And Zotero will automatically retrieve PDFs of those articles for you.

Double click on an article to open it in Zotero's Note Editor. Start reading.

Litmaps offers both free and paid plans.

There are special location-based discounts for scholars in low-income countries.
